We're now into a new NFL season--as of today! The season won't start for another 6 months with training camps, but off-season events will be of interest, along with hopes of great things for our favorite NFL team.

After the Super Bowl excitement dissipates, look for player acquisitions, new directions for some teams, coaching changes, etc., etc. Let's cover them in this thread.

First observation: Boy, wouldn't DeMarco Murray look great in a Colts uniform.

Second observation: Regression to the mean is going to be terrible for Detroit Lions fans...too bad they're saddled with that albatross of a Head Coach.

CLEVELAND - Johnny Manziel has sought help to change his off-field lifestyle.

Following a rough rookie season in the NFL, Manziel has entered a treatment program for unspecified reasons, an adviser for the Browns quarterback said in a statement released by the team on Monday.

"Johnny knows there are areas he needs to improve on to help him be a better family member, friend and teammate, so he decided to take this step in his life during the off-season," Manziel adviser Brad Beckworth said. Beckworth said the former Heisman Trophy winner entered the unnamed facility last week. He said Manziel's family is asking for privacy until he rejoins the team.

Beckworth's statement did not indicate reasons for Manziel needing treatment. However, the 22-year-old QB's penchant for partying followed him from college into the pros and Manziel's nightlife has been well-chronicled by both social and mainstream media.

The location of the facility where Manziel is staying is not immediately known.

Browns general manager Ray Farmer said in a statement that the team fully supports Manziel and respects his initiative in entering treatment. The team will respect Manziel's privacy during treatment, he said.

"Our players' health and well-being will always be of the utmost importance to the Cleveland Browns," Farmer said. "We continually strive to create a supportive environment and provide the appropriate resources, with our foremost focus being on the individual and not just the football player."

Citing privacy laws, a Browns spokesman declined to provide any further information about Manziel's situation.

Browns wide receiver Andrew Hawkins offered his support to Manziel on Twitter.

"Much love and support to my brother Johnny," Hawkins wrote. "Proud of him, big step. Football is secondary. God Bless!"

Manziel, who won the Heisman as a freshman at Texas A&M where his playmaking skills earned him his "Johnny Football" nickname, has faced questions for several years about his active nightlife. After he was drafted in May by the Browns in the first round, Manziel was repeatedly photographed drinking alcohol during weekend trips to Las Vegas. A photograph of Manziel floating on an inflatable swan raft swigging a bottle of champagne went viral.

The Browns became increasingly concerned about Manziel when a photo surfaced of Manziel holding a rolled bill in a bathroom.

Manziel often dismissed criticism about his behaviour, insisting he wasn't going to let others dictate to him how to live his life. However, following the season, Manziel seemed embarrassed by some of his choices and vowed to change his ways.

"It's about actions," he somberly told reporters on Dec. 29. "It's about being accountable and doing what I'm going to say. ... I'm either going to learn or I'm going to be finding something else to do."

Manziel spent the majority of last season as starter Brian Hoyer's backup before coach Mike Pettine switched their roles with the team still in the playoff hunt.

Manziel made his first start on Dec. 14 against Cincinnati, but failed miserably. He appeared unprepared and overmatched as the Bengals defence harassed him into two interceptions and the Browns were throttled 30-0. Manziel completed 10 of 18 passes for 80 yards, was sacked twice and looked nothing like a player capable of ending Cleveland's long search to find a franchise quarterback.

The next week at Carolina, Manziel injured his hamstring on a running play before halftime and was replaced by Hoyer.

Manziel was then fined by the Browns for missing a medical treatment before the season finale at Baltimore. Manziel promised he would change following the season, apologizing to Cleveland's fans and his teammates for being a distraction.

But hours after apologizing, he was photographed in Miami Beach and over the next few days there were photos of him on Instagram in a Houston nightclub and in Aspen, Colorado.

The Browns have made it clear to Manziel that they expect more from him if he wants to be their leader.

"Johnny has to show on and off the field he can be a professional," owner Jimmy Haslam said on Jan. 22. "He knows that. Everybody in the organization has told him that. He knows what we expect of him on and off the field and it's up to him to prove he can do that."

Manziel's uncertain future could influence the Browns' plans at quarterback. Hoyer is scheduled to become a free agent, but the Cleveland native may be willing to re-sign with Cleveland, especially if Manziel is not in the picture. The Browns also have two first-round picks (Nos. 12 and 19) in this year's draft and may be willing to use them to land a quarterback.

I'd like to see a new NFL off season initiative.

Disarming of the players, coaches and staff of the teams.

Wouldn't that be a wonderful headline banner?

NFL Teams, players and staff voluntarily surrender their guns.

That would be seen as un-American and, if it were a forced move, unconstitutional, especially in places like Arizona, Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Florida. Roger Goodell has enough problems without taking on the NRA and gun-toting defenders of the American right to bear arms.

The San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders have announced they are pursuing the possibility of relocating together to a shared stadium in the LA area as contingency in the event that still-ongoing efforts to secure public funding for new stadiums in their respective current cities fail. The teams released the following bullet-format joint statement as posted on the Chargers website:

Joint Statement from the Raiders and the Chargers
Thursday, February 19, 2015 6:55 PM PST

• We have both been working in our home markets to find a stadium solution for many years, so far unsuccessfully.

• We remain committed to continuing to work in our home markets throughout 2015 to try to find publicly acceptable solutions to the long-term stadium issue.

• We also both understand and respect the NFL’s relocation process, and we intend to adhere strictly to the relocation procedures that the League has set forth for Los Angeles.

• In particular, we respect the right of the NFL’s owners to decide on all Los Angeles-related relocation issues and understand that any relocation application that is filed for Los Angeles must obtain the approval of three-fourths of the NFL’s owners.

• Both teams have kept the NFL owners’ committee on Los Angeles, and the Commissioner, fully informed about our joint efforts.

• We are pursuing this stadium option in Carson for one straightforward reason: If we cannot find a permanent solution in our home markets, we have no alternative but to preserve other options to guarantee the future economic viability of our franchises.

• In short, for the remainder of 2015, we intend to move down two tracks simultaneously:
— On track one, we will continue to work in our home markets to find permanent stadium solutions that are publicly acceptable.
— On track two, we will work in Carson to preserve our options, and the future economic viability of our franchises, in the event that our efforts in our local markets fail.

• Throughout this process we will respect the rules and procedures set forth by the League and defer completely to the ultimate decision of the NFL’s owners.

Chargers, Raiders will jointly pursue an NFL stadium in Carson
by Sam Farmer
February 20, 2015, 3:00am

On the field, the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders have had as bitter a rivalry as any in the NFL but in a sense, they’re now partners.

The teams will officially announce Friday that, while they work on stadium deals in their current cities, they will jointly pursue a shared, $1.7-billion NFL stadium in Carson as an alternative.

Update: Proposal prompts dismay in San Diego, hope in Oakland

While theirs might seem to be an unlikely pairing -- the Silver & Black and the Powder Blue -- the Raiders and Chargers have actually been closer over the years than many people might think.

“Al is also a big reason for the strong rivalry between the Raiders and the Chargers and its popularity among both teams’ fans,” Chargers President Dean Spanos said, referring to the late Al Davis, legendary owner of the Raiders. “He personified the image and mystique of the Raiders, and that image has helped build the strength of our rivalries and the popularity of our game. There has been no one in the NFL like Al Davis.”

But the cantankerous Davis might never have believed this.

The Chargers and Raiders will continue to seek public subsidies for new stadiums in their home markets, but they are developing a detailed proposal for a privately financed Los Angeles venue in the event they can't get deals done in San Diego and Oakland by the end of this year, according to the teams.

In a statement given to The Times on Thursday, the Chargers and Raiders said: “We are pursuing this stadium option in Carson for one straightforward reason: If we cannot find a permanent solution in our home markets, we have no alternative but to preserve other options to guarantee the future economic viability of our franchises.”

The teams are working with “Carson2gether,” a group of business and labor leaders. The coalition will announce the project Friday at a news conference near the 168-acre site, a parcel at the southwest quadrant of the intersection of the 405 Freeway and Del Amo Boulevard.

They plan to immediately launch a petition drive for a ballot initiative to get voter approval to build the stadium.

This latest high-stakes move was precipitated by St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke, who announced in January his plan to build an 80,000-seat stadium on the land that used to be Hollywood Park.

That put pressure on the Chargers, who say 25% of their fan base is in Los Angeles and Orange counties. The Raiders, among the most financially strapped NFL teams, joined forces with the Chargers because they don't have the money build a stadium on their own.

The Jets and the Giants, who both play in East Rutherford, N.J., are the only NFL teams playing in the same stadium.

L.A., which has been without the NFL for two decades, now finds itself with three teams that could relocate here and four stadium proposals, including the Farmers Field concept downtown and developer Ed Roski's plan in the City of Industry.

Even skeptics have to concede the city has never been in a better position to have the country's No. 1 sport return, though none of the three teams has yet to commit to moving here.

Like the Rams, the Chargers and Raiders are on year-to-year leases in older stadiums. Prospects for new venues in San Diego and Oakland are bleak and, as is in L.A., there is no appetite to commit public money to build a stadium. The Carson proposal calls for the teams to be equal, as opposed to one's acting as landlord to the other.

The long-vacant Carson Marketplace site is part of an old municipal landfill and has been the subject of significant cleanup efforts in recent years. The NFL has looked into buying the site at least three times.

In the late 1990s, entertainment executive Michael Ovitz wanted to build on that site and bring in an expansion franchise. In 1999, Houston oilman Bob McNair outbid two competing L.A. groups, paying $750 million for the team that would become the Texans.

The Chargers and Raiders bought the land from Starwood Capital Group. Barry Sternlicht, its chairman, said of the project: “This is a great opportunity to return professional football to Los Angeles, and we are going to do everything we can to make it happen.”

Whereas Kroenke and his partners have expansive plans for retail space, housing and a 6,000-seat theater — along with the 80,000-seat stadium — on the 298-acre Hollywood Park site, the Carson concept calls only for a football stadium, with room for more than 18,000 parking spaces as well as tailgating.

“We're thinking about the project as a 21st century, next-generation stadium,” said architect David Manica, noting that the venue and renderings are still in the early conceptual stages. “We want it to be the ultimate outdoor event experience, which includes both sports and entertainment. And we want it to be uniquely L.A.”

The projected capacity for the stadium is about 68,000, expandable to more than 72,000.

Manica, president of Manica Architecture, was formerly at HOK Sport, where he led the design of the Texans' stadium, the renovation of the Miami Dolphins' stadium, and the seating bowl of Wembley Stadium in London.

One early concept for Carson is clear seats that reflect the color of the lights shining on them — the seats could be silver and black for Raiders games, and powder blue for Chargers games.

More pressing are the steps developers would need to take, including working with the coalition to support a ballot measure that would allow the venue to be built. If the clubs can gather the required signatures to place the stadium initiative on the ballot, approval can be attained either through a public election or by a vote of the Carson City Council.

Kroenke is further along in that regard, having already collected the signatures for a ballot initiative. Inglewood's mayor has said that rather than holding a public election, the council would vote on the initiative, perhaps as early as Tuesday.

The NFL long has contended that it will control the process of any return to L.A., including which team or teams will be allowed to relocate, and which stadium proposal will get the green light. How much control the league actually has is up for debate, as it does not have a strong track record of stopping teams that are determined to move. League rules stipulate that any such decision requires a three-quarters majority vote of the 32 teams.

The Chargers and Raiders said they have kept the league's new Committee on Los Angeles Opportunities, and the commissioner, fully informed about their joint effort, and that they intend to strictly adhere to the relocation procedures.

The Chargers have been seeking a stadium solution in the San Diego area for nearly 14 years, a period spanning seven mayors and nine proposals. The relationship between the club and the city has grown especially strained in recent days, as the Chargers have pushed the city to contribute to a new stadium.

The Raiders have been working on a stadium solution with Oakland and Alameda County for about six years but have not made much progress. The club, which has said that remaining in the Oakland market is a priority, has venue concepts but no taxpayer money has been committed. The Inglewood and Carson proposals do not involve any public money.

The reason the franchises would be able to privately finance a stadium in Carson, as opposed to their own cities, is that the L.A. market could better support the sale of hundreds of millions of dollars of preferred seat licenses, one-time payments for the right to buy a season ticket. The teams would also get revenues from naming rights; sponsorship and advertising would be far more lucrative than in smaller markets.

It's widely speculated in NFL circles that a franchise that moves from a smaller market to L.A. could end up being worth 150% of its current value. Franchises would probably have to pay a hefty relocation fee, although the league has never specified an amount.

The three teams all previously played in L.A., with the Raiders and Rams leaving Southern California after the 1994 season, and the Chargers, then in the old American Football League, calling the Coliseum home in 1960, their inaugural season.

All signs point to the Chargers and Raiders — like the Rams — targeting the 2016 season for relocation, should those teams not get acceptable deals to remain in their current cities. The NFL has long held that L.A. is a two-team market, and it's almost inconceivable that the league would allow three teams in such close proximity.

The NFL has ruled out any teams' relocating this season, and is strongly opposed to a franchise's enduring more than one lame-duck season in a market about to be vacated. A team or teams moving to L.A. would play for at least two seasons in a temporary home — most likely the Coliseum, Rose Bowl or possibly Dodger Stadium — while a new stadium was under construction.

And the USA think we are socialists which they are when it comes to finding public money for their stadiums but not so much when it comes to healthcare where they want pure capitalism instead of our hybrid model of single payer haha.

It is ironic that LA has no team but some say the fans there don't care as they get all the games for free on TV. No blackouts.

I guess it'd be too much for the Raiders and 49ers to share one stadium.

Good to see the Beast Mode returning to the Seahawks after...obviously feeling very furious as had he had one, two, or even three more cracks his team would have won back-to-back Super Bowls.

NFL has hired its first full-time female official: http://ca.reuters.com/article/sportsNew ... LR20150408

They deny it, but this is probably part of the league's damage control campaign after the badly mishandled Ray Rice fiasco. At any rate, the timing of this hiring is certainly convenient for the NFL in this regard.
NFL hires its first woman to officiate games full-time

By Steve Ginsburg

(Reuters) - The National Football League (NFL) on Wednesday said it would hire a woman for the first time to officiate games full-time for the most popular U.S. sport.

Sarah Thomas, 41, will join the NFL as a line judge after officiating in Conference USA, a college league, since 2007, the league said.

"I did not set out to become an NFL official," said Thomas, who has been working in the NFL's Officiating Development Program. "The further I went along in the progression, getting into Conference USA, part of me thought it may become a reality.

"But my goal has always been to be the best line judge I could be."

Shannon Eastin was the NFL's first female official, serving as a line judge for the first three games of the 2012 season. She was hired as a replacement official during the lockout of full-time referees in a labor dispute.

"I do honor the fact that many people consider me a trailblazer," said Thomas, a Mississippi native. "But I've been doing this because I love it. When you're out there officiating, the guys don't think of me as a female.

"They want me to be just like them - just be an official."

The NFL has come under withering criticism by women's groups and others during the past year for lenient punishments handed out by Commissioner Roger Goodell to players involved in domestic violence.

In response, the NFL strengthened its sanctions and hired four women to help shape league policy, including Lisa Friel, the former head of the Sex Crimes Prosecution Unit in the New York County District Attorney's Office.

Dan Blandino, NFL vice president of officiating, denied the criticism from women triggered Thomas's hiring.

"This is not something that happened overnight," he said. "Sarah has been officiating for 20 years. She's been on our radar screen for eight to nine years. We feel that she's ready."

The number of the NFL's female followers has increased dramatically in recent years and the league estimates that 43 percent of fans of the testosterone-dominated sport are women.

Since being an NFL official is a part-time job, Thomas, a married mother of three, works full-time as a pharmaceutical sales representative.

Conference USA asked Thomas to tuck her hair under her hat to avoid "stereotypes," she said, adding that she has been comfortable doing it and will also do it in the NFL.

"My hair is the least of my concerns," she said.

Well, I'm back now from a 2-month self-imposed holiday from football and have some catching up to do. Lots of off-season changes to NFL teams, although I haven't picked up on many of them yet. For the Seahawks, the big (huge) acquisition has to be TE Jimmy Graham. They lost C Max Unger to the Saints to get Graham, though, and Unger was a stud, all-pro player. So they'll need to concentrate on the O-line now in further free-agent acquisitions and the draft. The Hawks' other changes are not major, and they should return almost the same defense as last year's--albeit without Byron Maxwell at one corner. My hope is that they somehow find a dynamic, big wide receiver. If they can, they should be truly awesome on offense with Jimmy Graham and another reliable receiver to go along with their solid running attack. I guess it's possible that Chris Matthews, who looked good in the Super Bowl, could be that other receiver, but we don't have enough data on him yet.

Whatever, the Hawks should be very tough again in the 2015 season. Once again, they'll be fun to watch....

With his kickoff return for a TD in the first exhibition game, prospective Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett will likely get a place in the roster as a kick returning especially after Percy Harvin traded away. It looks like the Seahawks still need a lot of working in the secondary. In Super Bowl XLVIII they allowed Peyton Manning a then-Super Bowl record 34 completions but was lucky in that it only resulted in one touchdown. But they were not so lucky in Super Bowl XLIX as they allowed Tom Brady a new record 37 completions with his MVP performance and allowed two touchdowns in the fourth quarter after building a 10-point lead. Signing Kam Chancellor would be a huge first step.

Walking around CenturyLink Field, the Seahawks have quietly hung two new banners - 2014 NFC West Champions and 2014 NFC Champions. I guess these two recent championships is nothing to be too proud about since they came so close win winning another Super Bowl that showing off a Conference Championship can be rather embarrassing. So naturally there was no official presentation of these two new banners in a regular season home opener. Since the banners are so new, there are no pictures online yet and I didn't have my camera to zoom in.

This reminds me in the 2005 season home opener against Ottawa, some stadium personnel quietly unveiled two new Lions banners showing a list of the then-8 seasons when the Lions won the West Division. I guess that was nothing to be too proud about so after renovations those banners were not put up again.

Maybe Youppi brought that Expos banner with him when he moved to the Habs...

Miami Heat hanging jerseys for Dan Marino (who at least played in Miami) and Michael Jordan is about the dumbest thing yet. But then there's the NHL, who retired a number league-wide for a guy who played for two teams and had a cup or two of coffee with two others. Do they have Gretzky's jersey hanging in the rafters in New York and St Louis?
It was also pretty bad when the Phoenix, sorry Arizona, Coyotes retired Dale Hawerchuk's number, and they continue to honour Bobby Hull and Thomas Steen, none of whom ever played in Arizona.

Seattle doesn't do ceremonies for division or conference banners. I remember going down for pre-season games in 06 and 07 and their division/conference banners were already up for 05 and 06 respectively.
